NCAA suspends Sirin for one game

The NCAA has doled out a one-game suspension to 49ers freshman guard Gokhan Sirin for his participation with a professional club team. Sirin, a native of Istanbul, Turkey, will miss Charlotte’s season-opener against UNC-Asheville Friday night.

In injury news, junior forward An’Juan Wilderness will miss 2-4 weeks with a left calf strain he suffered during practice last week. A two-year starter for the Niners, Wilderness averaged 7.9 points and 3.7 rebounds as a sophomore.

Other injury updates include senior point guard DiJuan Harris being listed as day-to-day with a right ankle sprain he suffered during practice on Friday. Red-shirt freshman Shamarr Bowden is listed as probable for Friday’s game after suffering a dislocated shoulder in the team’s green-white scrimmage game on 49er Fan Day. Bowden was initially expected to be out for three weeks but returned to workouts ahead of schedule; he will wear a shoulder harness as a precautionary measure.

Charlotte will welcome junior forward Charles Dewhurst back to the lineup on Friday night as his doctor’s have given him the green light to play. Dewhurst suffered a season-ending knee injury against Maryland last spring and has been practicing with a protective knee brace. Dewhurst has been cleared to play in games without the brace, but will still wear it during practice to protect his knee.
