Charlotte is 0-2 all-time against Duke with both losses coming at Cameron Indoor Stadium in the early 90's. The 49ers lost 111-94 on Dec. 1, 1990 despite 30 points from freshman star Jarvis Lang. The following season, Charlotte came into Cameron Indoor on an 11-game winning streak at 11-1 but fell to top-ranked Duke, 104-82.
Previous to the Duke game that year, Charlotte had posted wins over Top 25 teams DePaul and Alabama as they pushed into the Top 25. Charlotte was coached by Duke all-American Jeff Mullins in both games.
The 49ers are 25-46 all-time against Top 25 opponents, including a 8-19 record against teams ranked in the top 10.
Current head man Bobby Lutz is 5-14 all-time against top 10 teams including the only two top true road wins: at #7 Syracuse, 2003-04 (W 96-92) and at#8/#7 Cincinnati, 2003-04 (W, 86-83).
Charlotte got by Elon 75-61 in the first round while # 8 Duke got by Coastal Carolina 74-49. The winner of tonight's game will move on to Madison Square Garden for the semifinal round and will face either Arizona State or TCU. The Niners are looking to start a season 3-0 for the first time since the 1995-96 season.
The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN at 6 p.m. with Brad Nessler and Jimmy Dykes and can also be heard on WBCN Radio , 1660 AM with Matt Swierad and Charlie Frederick.
