Rose Bowl Preview

Players to Watch: Ohio State QB Terrelle Pryor has underachieved this season and has to be great for the Buckeyes to have a chance at victory. Pryor is at his best when he gets outside of the pocket and can use his legs. That might be a problem in Pasadena though. Pryor has a torn PCL in his knee and if he is restricted to making plays from inside the pocket, the Buckeyes could be in big trouble. For the most part, Pryor hasn't been able to make plays down the field from inside the pocket. He completed just 11-25 passes and a pick in the loss to USC and threw two interceptions in OSU's loss to Purdue. Pryor's most efficient outing came when he was limited to short, dink and dunk passes, going 14-of-17 and 93 yards in OSU's win over Iowa but couldn't make plays when not on the move.

Oregon's LaMichael James ran for more than 100 yards in nine of his last 10 games this season. The only game the speedy freshman running back was held under 100 yards was against Washington State in a blowout (he was pulled after 81 yards and two touchdowns on just 13 carries.) James isn't the powerful runner the Ducks had in LaGarrette Blount but is more speedy and can make anyone miss in a one-on-one open-field situation.

While James is the Ducks' open-field runner, junior QB Jeremiah Masoli is the powerful runner that will run over anyone. The junior made his mark in the Holiday Bowl win over Oklahoma State last year, he ran for 106 yards and three touchdowns, also completing 18-of-32 passes for 258 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He threw just five interceptions this season compared to 15 touchdowns. Masoli's job will be to take care of the ball and keep the chains moving with his legs and his arm.

If Oregon gets up early, the Buckeyes are in trouble, the last thing OSU needs is to try and play from behind against this high-scoring Ducks team. This game will either be a close Ohio State win or an impressive Oregon blowout that could lead to a top five preseason ranking.

Quickfacts: The last time the Big Ten won the Rose Bowl was in 2000 when Wisconson beat Stanford, 17-9. The last time a Pac-10 team other than USC or Washington won the Rose Bowl was in 1987. The only time the Ducks won the Rose Bowl was in 1917 over Penn.

Charlotte tops Mercer, 91-80

The Charlotte 49ers (10-2) got back on track Tuesday night with a 91-80 victory over the visiting Mercer Bears (4-8). Coming off a disappointing 81-48 road loss to Old Dominion last Wednesday, the 49ers got back to what they do best: scoring the ball inside.

Three of Charlotte's bigs scored in double figures Tuesday night and after two sub-60 point outings, the 49ers put away 91 on Mercer. Charlotte's leading scorer with 17.3 points per game, Shamari Spears scored 23 points and pulled down six rebounds, freshman Chris Braswell recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 14 boards and Phil Jones came off the bench to score 11 points and grab eight rebounds.

"In the second half, our offense played really well," 49ers head coach Bobby Lutx said. "We got good play out of our big guys. Phil made some huge plays."

With point guard DiJuan Harris on the bench with foul trouble early, combo guard Derrio Green ran the point almost to perfection Tuesday night and turned in his best outing of the season. The Florida native scored a season-high 23 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out five assists in Harris' absence.

Charlotte started off slowly, and it looked like they might be in for another sloppy game against the Bears. The Niners started off on just 5-17 shooting from the field and trailed 21-14 at the 10:19 mark when Mercer's E.J. Kusnyer buried a three-pointer to give the Bears their biggest lead of the night.

Following Kusnyer's three, the Niners went on a 10-0 run over the next three minutes, using strong inside play from Spears and Green's jump shooting to give Charlotte a lead they wouldn't relinquish. The 49ers finished strong and held a 40-36 lead.

In the second half, Charlotte kept trying to pull away from the Bears, but Mercer simply wouldn't go away. The 49ers built leads of 13, 12 and 11 points but Mercer would come right back and chip the lead down to single digits. The 49ers closed the game making 7-of-8 free throws to make the final margin 91-80.

The 49ers, who have now won eight of their last nine games, are off to their best start since the 2004 season when they started 12-2 on their way to the NCAA Tournament.

James Florence, who scored 22 points for Mercer, broke Sam Mitchell's career scoring record. Florence has 2,001 points, passing Mitchell's 1,987. Kusnyer added 14 for Mercer, Jeff Smith scored 13 and Daniel Emerson scored 12 points and had 13 rebounds.

Charlotte returns to action Saturday night against nationally-ranked Georgia Tech at 7:00 p.m.

Game Notes: Mercer @ Charlotte

The Charlotte 49ers return to the court Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. to take on the Mercer Bears at Halton Arena. The 49ers (9-2) will be looking for their 10th win of the season after totaling only 11 in 2008-09. The game starts a two-game homestand that ends with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Charlotte is 4-0 at home this year and have recorded a double-digit win in each of the four victories.

Mercer (4-7) is 0-4 in "true" road games this season, losing to the likes of Providence, Florida State, Vanderbilt and Alabama. Tuesday will be the first meeting between the two teams. The Bears are led by guard James Florence. The senior out of Marietta Georgia is averaging 22 points per game and is one of the leading 3-point shooters at just under 35 percent. Mercer is coming off a 90-71 loss at the hands of the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Charlotte is coming off a stinging loss of their own. The 49ers traveled to Virginia last Wednesday to take on Old Dominion and suffered another blowout road loss, 81-48. The Niners have lost only twice this season, but both have been in blowout fashion; 81-48 @ ODU and 101-59 @ Duke.

The 49ers close out their non-conference schedule at home against Georgia Tech on Saturday and on the road at Tennessee next Wednesday night.

Old Dominion ends Charlotte's win streak

Old Dominion (8-4) jumped out to an early 10-point lead over Charlotte (9-2) and never looked back on Wednesday night, handing the 49ers an 81-48 loss in Norfolk, VA. The loss ended Charlotte's seven-game winning streak, four of which had come on the road. Both of Charlotte's losses this season have come by more than 30 points, at Duke (42), and Wednesday night (33).

The Monarchs opened up their double-digit lead early and stifled Charlotte's attempt at establishing an inside game. ODU held a 27-8 lead with 8:16 to play and shot 58 percent in the first half. Meanwhile, the Niners were held to just four baskets on 25 shots and committed 11 turnovers. ODU held a comfortable 40-13 lead at the halftime break.

For the game, ODU shot 53 percent from the field compared to Charlotte's 33 percent. The Monarchs also dominated the glass, outrebounding Charlotte 47-26. ODU also recorded 24 assists

The Niners improved to 48 percent shooting in the second half but never got closer than 25 and trailed by as many as 37.

Shamari Spears, Charlotte's leading scorer at 17.9 points per game led the 49ers with 12 points. Senior point guard DiJuan Harris, averaging more than 10 points per game, scored just one.

Gerald Lee led four different Monarchs into double-figures with 16 points on 8-10 shooting, Trian Iliadis added a career-high 13 points, Kent Bazemore had 11 and Frank Hassell scored 10.

Charlotte will now face a long, six-day layoff before they return home next Tuesday to take on Mercer at 7 p.m.

Game Notes: Charlotte @ ODU

The Charlotte 49ers (9-1) will stay on the road Wednesday to take on the Old Dominion Monarchs (7-4) in a renewed rivalry between two old Sunbelt Conference teams (7 p.m. 1660-AM, Matt Sweirad). At 9-1, Charlotte is off to it's best start under head coach Bobby Lutz and it's best start since the 1991-92 season. The Niners are riding a seven-game winning streak, four in a row on the road, and have gotten themselves into the national conversation.

Against Old Dominion, the 49ers will face one of their stiffest tests yet. The Monarchs are coming off an impressive 61-57 road victory over No. 11 Georgetown. The two teams were in the Sunbelt Conference from 1983-91 and have met on the hardwood 26 times. Last year, ODU shot 50 percent from behind the three-point arc on their way to a 69-68 win at Halton Arena.

Charlotte faces an Old Dominion team that is a perfect 5-0 at home and is coming off an impressive road victory at No. 11 Georgetown. The Monarchs are holding opponents under 55 points per game and just a 39 percent shooting percentage. By contrast, Charlotte is scoring 80.1 points and is shooting 45 percent. Two of ODU's losses came on the road against powerful A-10 players Dayton (58-50) and Richmond (67-60). Charlotte trails in the all-time series 12-14. Head coach Bobby Lutz is 1-1 in Norfolk, the Niners are just 4-8 all time.

The Niners were just 2-14 in "true" road games last season but are already an impressive 5-1 on the road in 2009-10. Charlotte is 5-0 in the month of December and is a perfect 9-0 in December over the last two years. Last season's 4-0 mark included wins against Mississippi State and Southern Illinois.

Old Dominion is led this season by senior forward Gerald Lee. A native of Finland, Lee is averaging 13.5 points per game and at 6-10 250 pounds, will be a tough task to handle. Also playing a prominent role for ODU will be combo guard Marsharee Neely. The junior guard is averaging 8.1 points per game and is one of the team's leading three-point shooters at just under 33 percent. A low-scoring team, Old Dominion is averaging just 66 points per game and is shooting just 32 percent from behind the arc.

Look for Charlotte to try and shut down Lee inside and control the game in the paint with Shamari Spears and standout freshman Chris Braswell. If the Niners can control the play inside and knock down a number of shots from behind the arc, they should be sitting at 10-1 for the Christmas holiday.

Charlotte returns home to Halton Arena to play Mercer next Tuesday night.

49ers beat Winthrop for 7th straight win

The Charlotte 49ers improved to 9-1 Sunday afternoon with a 57-47 road victory over the Winthrop Eagles. The 49ers are off to their best start since the 1991-92 season when they started 11-1 on their way to the Metro Conference Championship. Charlotte has won by double-digits in its last five games.

"To not play our best yet find a way to win on the defensive end and through rebounding is satisfying," 49ers head coach Bobby Lutz said. "If you play bad and win by one on the road, it's a good win. There's no bad win on the road."

Both teams struggled from the field for the entire afternoon. Charlotte shot a below-average 39 percent, while the Eagles converted just 31 percent of their field goals. The Niners went just 3-19 from behind the arc, well below their season average, but were stellar from the foul line down the stretch to solidify the win.

The first half began slowly, with neither team able to make hardly anything from outside the paint. With Winthrop leading 15-14 with just under seven minutes remaining, 49ers forward An'Juan Wilderness came off the bench for his first minutes of the game.

The junior imposed his will on the Eagles over the next two minutes, scoring eight points in a 10-0 run to push the Charlotte lead to 24-15 with just under five minutes remaining. Charlotte led 28-24 at the break after Winthrop buried a three at the buzzer.

With Charlotte leading 49-47 with just over two minutes remaining, junior center Phil Jones nailed a mid-range jump shot to give the 49ers a four point lead they wouldn't relinquish. Senior point guard DiJuan Harris knocked down 5-of-6 free throws over the remaining minutes to seal the win for Charlotte.

Winthrop shot just 31 percent for the game, making it the sixth straight game that the 49ers have held an opponent under 38 percent shooting. Winthrop also shot poorly from the free throw line (42 percent), and from behind the arc (20 percent).

Junior Shamari Spears led the way for Charlotte with 13 points while Harris added 12. Off the bench, Wilderness scored 11 while Jones came through for six points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots.

"I thought he made some toughness plays that he didn't make in years past," Lutz said of Jones, who posted double digit rebounds for the second time this season. "I love winning plays and today, Phil Jones made a lot of winning plays."

Charlotte will play at Old Dominion on Wednesday.

Game Notes: Winthrop

The Charlotte 49ers (8-1) winners of six straight games, will travel to Rock Hill, SC to take on the Winthrop Eagles (5-4) Sunday at 4:00 p.m. At 8-1, the 49ers are off to their best start since the 1991-92 season when they started 11-1.

The six-game winning streak has included three wins on the road, including an 87-65 win over Louisville in Freedom Hall on December 5. The winning streak has built some national prominence for the Niners, and Charlotte is now receiving Top 25 votes in both the AP and ESPN/USA Today polls.

The last time the Niners had a six-game win streak was during the 2004-05 season when they went a perfect 7-0 in February on their way to national ranks and an NCAA Tournament berth.

The 49ers also won seven straight in the 2001-02 season on the way to the NCAA Tournament. In Bobby Lutz's first year as head coach of the Niners, the team won eight straight, including four wins in four days to win the Conference USA Tournament. The Niners also secured a first-round NCAA Tournament win that year over the Lamar Odom-led Rhode Island Rams.

Charlotte owns a 1-0 all-time lead in the series with Winthrop, securing a 70-53 victory in Halton Arena last January.

During the current six-game winning streak, the 49ers are averaging 87.3 points per game with a .497 FG% and a .368 3FG%. The 49ers have scored at least 80 points in each of the victories and their average margin of victory is an impressive 22.1 points.

Following Sunday's game against Winthrop, the Niners will travel to Virginia to take on Old Dominion on Wednesday night.

49ers rout Gardner-Webb, 95-66

The Charlotte 49ers men’s basketball team improved their 2009-10 record to 8-1 with an easy 95-66 home win over Gardner-Webb Saturday afternoon at Halton Arena. The 49ers won their sixth straight game behind double-digit scoring efforts from six different players. The 8-1 start is the best for Charlotte since the 1991-92 season when the team started 11-1 and won the Metro Conference Championship.

Junior forward Shamari Spears and senior guard Dijuan Harris led Charlotte in scoring with 13 points each, Saturday marked the first time Charlotte had six players in double-figures since last season’s 100-80 victory over Youngstown State.

The 95-point total marked the sixth straight game of 80 or more points and the second consecutive game of more than 90 points.

“It was a really terrific team win,” 49ers coach Bobby Lutz said of the win. “We got contributions from so many guys like we’ve been getting. It’s good to see that and good to continue to be able to play guys because you never know what’s going to happen over the course of a year.”

Joining Spears and Harris in double-figure scoring were Chris Braswell (11) Shamarr Bowden (11) K.J. Sherrill (10) and forward An’Juan Wilderness (10) who scored his first points of the season after returning from a calf injury.

“In the first half, I thought when K.J. (Sherrill) came in and we went to our full-court press, that really gave us a spurt,” Lutz said. “We took a lead and enlarged it, and that really made a difference in the game.”

Gardner-Webb stuck with Charlotte in the early-going; and when Harris went down with an ankle injury, it looked like it might stay that way. It was only a mild injury though, and Harris quickly returned. With Charlotte leading 13-9, Harris made his return, much to the delight of Niner Nation. After Harris reentered the game, Charlotte went on a 13-0 run and never looked back on the Runnin’ Bulldogs.

“I knew my team needed me so I just played through the pain tonight,” Harris said of his ankle injury. “I’m very sore right now, but I’m just glad about the win. I knew I had to play through pain tonight, so I had already set my mind on playing through it.”

Charlotte had only 11 turnovers on the game and outrebounded GWU 46-36. For the game, the Niners shot 58 percent from the field and outscored the Bulldogs 56-30 in the paint.

“Obviously Charlotte had too much for us tonight both inside and outside,” Gardner-Webb head coach rick Scruggs said. “We tried some different things tonight because we knew what we were up against and knew what we had to do. Sometimes is worked and sometimes it didn’t.”

All 16 Charlotte players saw playing time and 13 different 49ers scored points. The 49ers will have eight days off before their next game; a Sunday afternoon tussle with the Winthrop Eagles in Rock Hill, S.C.

Here are some images of what the potential football stadium will look like. It will be located where the current intramural fields are adjacent to the Robert and Mariam Hayes baseball stadium.

BOT votes to start football in 2013 at Charlotte

The UNC Charlotte Board of Trustees agreed to continue with plans to start a football team in 2013 this morning. The Plan E that was passed will require a a student fee increase of up to $320 when it is phully phased in over the next several years.

The decision was made after a lengthy discussion between the board and other campus leaders. Chancellor Dubois also gave a power-point presentation highlighting the plan. Also discussed was pushing back the football discussion for three years to give the economy time to recover.

The vote drew unanimous support from the trustees.

"It almost makes me kind of speechless, this is just unbelieveable," Athletic Director Judy Rose said of the decision. "I'm extremely optimistic that the community wants this, and the corporate community wants football for UNC Charlotte and they share our vision for this university."

The timing of the vote was just at the right time, as it will give the university time to seek approval from the UNC-system leaders to raise student fees to support the football program. It will also allow the univesity to ask state lawmakers to sign off on a $45 million on-campus stadium complex.

Rose also gave some intimate details about what the football program and facilities would entail. In terms of scheduling, Rose thinks the school might be a little bit behind.

"We're behind the 8 ball on a schedule for 2013," Rose said of the scheduling conflicts. "If you know much about college athletics, in particular football, those schedules are done four or five years in advance."

Part of the student-paid money would go towards running the football organization, but up to $120 per year would go towards to building of the stadium.

The university has sold more than 3,200 football-seat-licenses and received $1.6 million in private donations.

5 things to take from Tuesday night's win

1. Chris Braswell is on pace to have one of the greatest freshman seasons in 49er history. The reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week followed up his fantastic performance at Louisville with another outstanding effort against Winston-Salem State. Braswell scored 16 points and pulled down 15 rebounds in just 19 minutes of action. In doing so, he passed Cedric "Cornbread" Maxwell, Kevin King, Curtis Withers and Rodney White on the all-time list with his fourth double-double as a freshman.

2. Charles Dewhurst is doing just fine after his knee injury last year. The junior forward suffered a season-ending knee injury against Maryland last year but is showing no ill-affects this season. In 15 minutes of game-time, Dewhurst went a perfect 5-for-5 from the field, grabbed four rebounds and had just one turnover.

3. Gokhan Sirin can really shoot the ball. After a few jittery games to start the season, the freshman came in and made a real impact in Tuesday night's game. Sirin came off the bench in the second half and buried 3-of-5 3-pointers, much to the delight of the crowd in just seven minutes. He also had three offensive rebounds.

4. An'Juan Wilderness made season-debut after missing the first seven games with a calf injury. The junior saw limited minutes in his return but still crashed the boards for six rebounds. His shooting touch looked a little rusty but with more playing time, that should come back.

5. The 49ers have scoring options all over the floor. Against Louisville, the guard combo of Derrio Green and Shamarr Bowden provided much of the scoring for Charlotte when Shamari Spears was shut down on the inside. Tuesday night, with Green and Bowden relatively held in check, Spears and Chris Braswell dominated on the inside. Spears scored a game-high 17 points and Charlotte had four players reach double-figures for their highest scoring output of the season.

Charlotte's bigs power 49ers past Winston-Salem State

Behind another strong performance for freshman Chris Braswell and a stellar night from Shamari Spears, the Charlotte 49ers blew past undersized Winston-Salem State 94-52, Tuesday night.

Braswell went a perfect 7-7 from the field, scored 16 points and pulled down 15 rebounds. The fantastic frosh now has 29 rebounds combined over the last two games and passed the likes of Cornbread Maxwell, Kevin King, Rodney White and Curtis Withers with his fourth double-double of the season. Spears added 17 points for Charlotte (7-1), who continue to power past teams with their deadly inside game.

“Obviously, I’m very pleased with the way we played,” 49ers head man Bobby Lutz said. “In years past, it may have been a little bit of a danger game coming off a big win. But this team’s got a lot of focus. Even though this was a game we expected to win, I don’t think we took them for granted at all.”

Behind five early points in the paint from Braswell, Charlotte went on a 9-0 run to begin the game and never looked back. In Saturday’s win over Louisville, Spears was shut down and the 49ers relied on their prominent outside shooters Shamarr Bowden and Derrio Green to knock down 3-pointers. Tonight was a different story though, as Charlotte scored at will against the Rams’ undersized big men and controlled the boards.

For the game, Charlotte held a 50-27 edge in rebounding and outscored the Rams’ bench 38-9. Poor shooting and an inability to get the ball on the inside prevented the Rams from keeping this one close. Lamar Monger led WSSU in scoring with 14 points while Paul Davis added 12 points and seven rebounds.

“We just really put an emphasis in practice in boxing out more and being physical,” Lutz said of the huge rebounding edge. “In our guards chasing, you know as good as our post-rebounding was, Dijuan (Harris) had four defensive rebounds and besides Chris (Braswell), that’s as many as anybody got.”

The 49ers focused on taking high-percentage shots from inside the paint in the first half to build a 43-22 lead at the break. Overall, Charlotte shot 57 percent in the first half, going just 1-6 from behind the arc. Following the strong performance in Louisville on Saturday, the guard duo of Bowden and Green was held in check, combining for only six points on the night.

In the second half, Charlotte continued to rebound the ball well and score high-percentage baskets, outscoring the Rams 51-30 in the final stanza. Junior An’Juan Wilderness made his debut after missing the first seven games with a strained left calf and pulled down six rebounds.

Charlotte freshman Gokhan Sirin came off the bench to knock down three second-half 3-pointers and pull down five rebounds, much to the delight of Niner Nation. Also seeing action late in the game were Trevin Parks, Colby Lewis and Kyle Church.

Charlotte returns to the hardwood Saturday afternoon to take on Gardner Webb at 3:30 p.m. as part of a double-header with the women’s team.

Charlotte opens two-game homestand Tuesday

The Charlotte 49ers return home for a two-game homestand this week, beginning with Winston-Salem State Tuesday at 8 p.m. and Saturday against Gardner Webb at 3:30 p.m.

Charlotte is coming off an impressive 22-point victory over No. 18 Louisville Saturday night, handing Rick Pitino his worst home loss as coach of the Cardinals.

The 6-1 49ers are off to their best start since the 2000-01 season, a year in which they made the NCAA Tournament. The last time Charlotte started the season 7-1 was in the 1994-95 season when they went on to an eventual 19-9 record behind the strong play of 49ers star Jarvis Lang (16.4 ppg; 8.9 rpg). In 1991-92, the 49ers started off 11-1. After an opening season loss, the 'Niners ripped off 11 straight wins.

The 49ers have never played Winston-Salem State while the 49ers own a 1-0 record all-time against Gardner Webb. Charlotte won the only meeting between the teams in 2007 with an 83-51 victory over the Bulldogs.

Junior An'Juan Wilderness was expected to make his return from a strained calf in Saturday's game at Louisville but did not return. He is listed as questionable for tomorrow's game against WSSU.

The 49ers' 22-point win over Louisville was the largest margin of victory for head coach Bobby Lutz over a Top 25 opponent. It also marked the third consecutive year that Charlotte has beaten a Top 25 team. The first time a team under Lutz has achieved that mark.

After his 21-point, 14-rebound effort against Louisville, standout freshman Chris Braswell was named A-10 Rookie of the Week. Braswell leads Charlotte in rebounds per game (9.1) and has three double-doubles through just seven games. the last freshman to lead Charlotte in rebounding was Jarvis Lang in 1990-91 (10.6). Former Charlotte freshman standouts Cedric "Cornbread" Maxwell, Kevin King, Rodney White and Curtis Withers all had three double-doubles as freshman.

Niners streak past Louisville

Behind 21 points from freshman Chris Braswell and a career-high 20 points from freshman guard Derrio Green, the Charlotte 49ers routed No. 18 Louisville Saturday night, 87-65 in Freedom Hall.

Braswell also pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds while Shammar Bowden added 17 points for the 49ers (6-1).

The 49ers made 10 of 24 three-pointers and dominated the Cardinals on the glass 49-35. The win was the 49ers first over a ranked team since they beat No. 16 Xavier at home in February and was the Cradinal's worst home loss since losing by 34 to the 49ers back in 2001 when the teams were both in Conference USA.

The duo of Bowden and Green combined to go 9 for 20 from behind the arc, including a couple that set back a second-half Louisville surge.

Without starters Jerry Smith and Peyton Siva, and prominent backup Preston Knowles, the Cardinals were never able to keep up with Charlotte. But with the way the 49ers were shooting, it might not have mattered.

The 49ers didn't waste much time getting started as Green knocked down three straight 3-pointers in the opening minutes to give the 49ers a 17-6 lead.

Prioir to the game, Rick Pitino said he was concerned with slowing down Shamari Spears on the inside. And they did, holding Spears to just nine points--12 under his average and nine rebounds.

The 49ers' backcourt made him pay for it.

The 49ers frustrated Samardo Samuels on the inside as Louisville couldn't match the 'Niners hot shooting. The 49ers took a 47-32 lead into halftime as Green buried yet another long three just before the buzzer. Green turned to the crowd and gave the "3 point" sign as he raced back down the floor.

Charlotte returns home on Tuesday night as part of a double-header with the women's team to take on Winston Salem State.

Charlotte cruises past ECU, 80-68

Behind a season-high 17 points from senior point guard Dijuan Harris and 10 points off the bench for junior Phil Jones, the Charlotte 49ers men’s basketball team won convincingly over ECU Wednesday night, 80-68.

In just 32 minutes of game action, Harris turned in his most productive game of the season, scoring 17 points, dishing out six assists and shooting a respectable 80 percent from the foul line.

“This game was a good game, we won. But we need to go watch some tape,” Harris said following the 80-68 win. “We need to work on the mistakes we made. Now it’s time to look ahead to Saturday against Louisville. We have a big game that we have to prepare for.”

The win improved Charlotte to 5-1 on the young season and dropped road-weary East Carolina to 3-5. Charlotte won only 11 games last season, but this is a new season, and the 49ers are off to one of the best starts in team history under head coach Bobby Lutz.

“It’s a much better start than last year,” Harris said of the strong start. “We had a tough loss against Duke. We gotta just continue to get better though at the defensive end. We did get some stops tonight but we didn’t rebound particularly well tonight. We just have to go back to the lab.”

Charlotte forward Shamari Spears didn’t crack the 20-point mark for the first time this season but still came through with a solid effort, scoring 12 points while pulling down six rebounds in just his fifth game as a 49er.

The depth of the 49ers played a huge role in the eventual outcome against ECU as well. Charlotte had 10 different players score and outscored ECU’s bench 37-3. Jones led the bench attack with 10 points in just 21 minutes of play.

“I think some teams, we can wear down over the course of a 40 minute game,” 49ers head coach Bobby Lutz said of his team’s depth. “Everybody that came in did a good job. In my mind, they’re all starters and they’re all important. Against Louisville we could change it up. It just depends on the situation.”’

ECU’s Brock Young led all scorers with a season-high 24 points while the Pirates’ Chad Wynn had a game-high 10 rebounds.

Charlotte came out on fire shooting and led by as much as 18 near the end of the first half. The second half however, was a much different story.

In all, 47 personal fouls were called during the game and at times, the number of fouls being called seemed to dictate the pace of play. Charlotte pushed it’s lead to as many as 19 early in the second half, but the slow pace of play allowed the Pirates to pull to within seven with just under four minutes remaining. The 49ers closed out the game on a 10-5 scoring run to lock up another win and move the team to it’s best start since the 2000-01 season.

Charlotte continues it’s Conference USA schedule this Saturday when they take on Louisville at 7 p.m. in Freedom Hall. Charlotte is 15-16 all-time against their old conference foes, including a 5-10 record at Freedom Hall. The Niners held a 12-9 series advantage from 1996-2005 when the two teams were members of Conference USA.

Strong effort by Spears pushes Charlotte past Yale

Shamari Spears once again proved his value to the Charlotte 49ers, putting away 28 points in Charlotte's 88-74 win over Yale on Monday. Spears had 10 points early, but foul trouble sent him to the bench midway through the first half. Once Spears went to the bench, Yale cut a once 14-point Charlotte lead to one at the break when Yale's Jordan Gibson nailed a half-court shot.

"Shamari being out of the game hurts us offensively," 49ers head coach Bobby Lutz said. "The difference in that stretch was that we turned it over and were not good defensively. We knew Gibson was a good player, we just didnt know he was a good shooter. He is a great athlete."

Derrio Green also provided a strong effort for the 49ers (3-1) who improved their record to 2-0 all-time against Yale. Green scored a career-high 18 points, knocking down six three-pointers and pulling down five rebounds.

"I finally got the monkey off my back," Green said. "It's really due to the other players and coaches. They believe in me and I believe in myself. Right now I feel like I can shoot it."

Senior point guard DiJuan Harris also got in foul trouble and had to spend some unusual minutes on the bench, paving the way for Green to run the point.

"I'm really trying to do better on the defensive end and help DiJuan out," Green said. "It was a good learning experience, as the game went on, I felt more comfortable playing the point guard. I just did it long enough to get DiJuan back in there."

Junior center Phil Jones came off the bench to score 10 points, pulled down seven rebounds and had four blocks for his second game in double-figures this season.

Overall, Charlotte had four players score in double-figures and shot a season-best 51 percent from the field. The Niners had nine first-half turnovers but pulled it together in the second half with only two turnovers.

Charlotte will look to move to 4-1 on the young season when they take on Hofstra tomorrow at 7 p.m. in Hempstead, NY.

Murphy qualifies for final stage of Q-school

Former Charlotte 49ers golf standout Trevor Murphy tied for 18th place in the second qualifying stage of PGA Tour Qualifying school to earn a spot in the Q-school final stage.

Murphy fired an 8-under par 280 in the second stage held at Southern Hills PLantation Club in Brooksville,Fla. to tie for 18th. The top 21 and ties moved on to the final stage. Murphy shot a third-round five-under par 67 to move into position then carded a solid one-under par 71 in the final round to solidify his place in the final stage.

The final stage will be held Dec. 2-7 at Bear Lakes C.C. in West Palm Beach Fla.

As part of the 49ers, Murphy helped the team to four NCAA Tournament appearances and helped Charlotte to a third place finish in 2007. Murphy also competed in the 2008 Wachovia Championship held at the nearby Quail Hollow club via a Monday qualifier.

Niners fall in first round of NCAA Tournament

The Charlotte 49ers men’s soccer team’s season came to an end Friday night at Transamerica field in the first round of the NCAA Tournament against UNC Wilmington. The Niners once again scored first, allowed a late goal and fell in penalty kicks.
Adam Gross scored in the 28th minute for Charlotte, while Daniel Roberts scored for UNCW in the 81st minute to tie the score.

“We defended very well tonight and really never looked like we would concede a goal,” Charlotte coach Jeremy Gunn said. “The really disappointing thing tonight was that we just didn’t play well going forward. Our strikers have been incredible through the year, but they just struggled tonight.”

The game was played under incredibly tough conditions as a thick layer of fog covered the field for the majority of the night. The fog was so thick at the time of Gross’ 28th-minute goal that members of the media couldn’t even see the play develop and had to be told what happened. The fog eventually cleared in the second half to provide better visibility.

“It was pretty simple really. I got the ball around midfield and the Red Sea parted for me,” Gross said of his ninth goal of the season. “I was able to dribble in unimpeded for about 20 yards. I hit a shot and the field was wet, the ball skipped, it was low and the keeper lost track of it and it just went off him and into the corner.”

Gross’ goal was the ninth of the season for the senior midfielder and looked for a long time as if it had moved the Niners on to the next round. The goal moved Gross into a 19th-place tie in all-time 49er points scored with 51.

Behind the strong play of goalkeeper David Martin and senior defenseman Nathan Mathers, Charlotte held their 1-0 advantage at the break and outshot UNCW 7-5. Both teams had numerous opportunities to score in the final 25 minutes of the half but failed to capitalize.

The 49ers nearly made the score 2-0 in the second half when Jennings Rex received a beautiful through-ball from near midfield. However, Seahawks goalkeeper Brock Duckworth made the save of the game to keep the score 1-0.

With just under 10 minutes remaining in the second half, Charlotte committed a foul just outside of its own 18-yard box. From around 25 yards out, Roberts stepped up and curled a perfect shot just past Martin for the tying score and his fourth goal of the season.

“To be honest, I haven’t hit one that well all year,” Roberts said of his game-tying goal. “I practiced them a lot over the summer and had been quite disappointed all season. So it was nice to finally get one right. It came at the right time.”

Neither team could break the scoreboard in the final nine minutes of regulation or in either overtime period. UNCW eventually took the game 4-1 in penalty kicks after the Seahawks went 4-4 and the Niners missed two of their first three shots. The win moved UNCW on to the next round to play Wake Forest on Sunday afternoon.

Duke rolls past Charlotte 101-59

Shamari Spears stepped up to the foul line in Cameron Indoor Stadium and drained two free throws, tying the score. Unfortunately for Charlotte, the score was 2-2, and that’s as close as they would ever get Tuesday night.

Duke’s Nolan Smith scored a career-high 24 points, Jon Scheyer added 20 more and No. 8 Duke routed Charlotte 101-59 on Tuesday night in the second round of the NIT Season Tip-Off. Kyle Singler finished with 17 points for Duke (3-0), who never trailed, shot 52.9 percent from the field and made 12 three-pointers in advancing to next week’s semifinal round at Madison Square Garden.

“Obviously Duke was very impressive tonight, we’re not really happy with the way we played,” 49ers head coach Bobby Lutz said following the 101-59 drubbing. “They really imposed their will on us tonight from the start.”

Spears scored 20 points to lead the undermanned 49ers (2-1), who failed to win a second-consecutive game against a Top 25 opponent dating back to last season’s win over 17th-ranked Xavier. Marred by 12 first-half turnovers and poor shooting from the field, the 49ers were never a threat to Duke and didn’t record their first field goal until RaShad Coleman made the score 14-4 with 16:38 remaining in the first half. At times, the 49ers’ offense looked like a one-man show. Spears, a transfer from Boston College who is no stranger to Cameron Indoor and the Crazies, recorded his second straight 20-point performance. However, none of Charlotte’s other players recorded more than six points

The 49ers had been expected to put up a fight against the Blue devils, who were without forward Mason Plumlee due to a broken left wrist and Smith’s suspension for playing in a non-sanctioned summer league in the first two games of the season.
With Smith returning on Tuesday night, the Blue Devils didn’t miss a beat; recording their 71st consecutive non-conference win at home and 31st straight home win against unranked opponents. Duke, the three-time champions of the preseason NIT, improved to 20-2 all-time in the event.

“We were really worried about their physical play on both ends and the question was could we be tough enough,” Lutz said. “They took us out of what we were trying to do. Give them credit, it was a great performance.”

Duke’s top three scorers, Smith, Schyer and Singler combined for 61 points, two more than Charlotte’s entire team output. Charlotte shot just 23.8 percent from behind the arc and was outrebounded 45-32 by the Blue Devils, who have won their first three games by an average of more than 30 points.

“Hopefully, this is the low point of the season. At some point, you start building for the next game,” Lutz said. “In the second half, we tried to play some different people and tried to experiment and see. We’re going to continue to work hard and look forward to the next game. But tonight was obviously a ver disappointing night for us.”

The 49ers will now have a substantial period of time to regroup from the “Debacle in Durham” as they won’t play again until Monday against a team to be determined. Charlotte’s non-conference schedule won’t get any easier from here as they must travel on the road to play Louisville and Tennessee and will play a home game against 20th-ranked Georgia Tech of the ACC on Jan. 2.

Bowden scores 21 in debut, Charlotte beats UNCA 86-70

The Charlotte 49ers men’s basketball team kicked off their season Friday night with an 86-70 win over the visiting Bulldogs of UNC Asheville. Charlotte had five different players score in double-figures and was led by redshirt-freshman Shamarr Bowden’s 21 points. The win was also the 200th of head coach Bobby Lutz’s 49er career, the most all-time for a 49er head coach.

“Pleased to get the first win, especially with the injury situation and some other things we were dealing with,” head coach Bobby Lutz said. “Give UNC Asheville credit, they came in with a great game plan, executed it very well and hung around. I though Asheville played very well today, they have a good team.”

Charlotte was led in the paint by junior center Phil Jones and freshman forward Chris Braswell, both of whom recorded double-doubles on the night. Jones scored 10 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in just 12 minutes of play in the first half to fill the void left by suspended Boston College transfer Shamari Spears. Braswell, a highly-touted freshman player scored 10 points and recorded 11 rebounds in his collegiate debut.

“Last year I was a little overweight and it affected me on and off the court,” Jones said. “I used this whole summer to dedicate my game to basketball. Slimmed down, lost a couple pounds, I’m quicker to the ball and it just pays off.”

Charlotte stretched its lead to as many as 16 in the first half and led 40-27 at the break. The Bulldogs came out firing in the second half however, and cut the Charlotte lead to just one point when Quinard Jackson made a layup to make the score 49-48. That’s when Shamarr Bowden went off. The redshirt-freshman buried four three-pointers on four straight possessions to push Charlotte’s lead to 61-51, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

“Our point guard (DiJuan Harris) knows where I’m going to be in transition and we play good together,” Bowden said. “He knows where I like to catch it and shoot and he got me the ball and the guys looking for me from the inside, from the post did a nice job of getting me the ball.”

On his birthday, Charlotte senior point guard DiJuan Harris came away with a solid performance, scoring 14 points, adding six assists and was a perfect 7-7 from the foul line.

Chris Stephenson came off the bench to lead UNC Asheville in points with 22 and rebounds with six.

“He’s (Stephenson) really a talented player,” Asheville head coach Ed Biedenbach said. “He’s been kind of a floater for us, free-wheeling, free-thinking and he’s gotten better every day. He’s a great athlete and he’s a good shooter.”

Charlotte denied Asheville’s attempt to rally by capitalizing on 17 consecutive free throws during a six-minute span in the second half. The 49ers finished the game at 83 percent from the foul line. The win was the sixth season-opening win in a row for Charlotte and pushed Lutz’s record in openers to 11-1.

Charlotte now heads on the road to face Elon in the opening round of the Dicks Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off in Durham, N.C. on Monday at 9:30 p.m.

The NCAA has doled out a one-game suspension to 49ers freshman guard Gokhan Sirin for his participation with a professional club team. Sirin, a native of Istanbul, Turkey, will miss Charlotte’s season-opener against UNC-Asheville Friday night.

Other injury updates include senior point guard DiJuan Harris being listed as day-to-day with a right ankle sprain he suffered during practice on Friday. Red-shirt freshman Shamarr Bowden is listed as probable for Friday’s game after suffering a dislocated shoulder in the team’s green-white scrimmage game on 49er Fan Day. Bowden was initially expected to be out for three weeks but returned to workouts ahead of schedule; he will wear a shoulder harness as a precautionary measure.

Charlotte will welcome junior forward Charles Dewhurst back to the lineup on Friday night as his doctor’s have given him the green light to play. Dewhurst suffered a season-ending knee injury against Maryland last spring and has been practicing with a protective knee brace. Dewhurst has been cleared to play in games without the brace, but will still wear it during practice to protect his knee.

Harris to be ready for season opener

If you've seen DiJuan Harris walking around UNC Charlotte with a boot on his right foot and propped up on crutches, there's no need to worry.

The senior 49er point guard sprained his right ankle during practice last Friday and is just taking it easy for the time being as a precautionary measure. As of Monday, Harris is projected to start on Friday night against UNC-Asheville in Charlotte's home opener.

Harris, a 2006 graduate of Victory Christian played in 1,146 minutes last year for an average of 37 minutes per game. He also ranked in the top 10 nationally in 2008-09 in assists and assist to turnover ratio. Only Harris and Levance Fields of Pitt ranked in the top 6 in both categories. Harris had eight points, six rebounds and 10 assists in Charlotte's 91-70 win over JCSU Thursday night in the team's exhibition opener.

49ers dump JCSU in exhibition play

Junior forward Shamari Spears and the Charlotte 49ers dumped Johnson C. Smith 91-70 in exhibition action Thursday night at Halton Arena. Spears had 26 points to lead all players and showed the promise of Charlotte’s retooled frontcourt that should help Charlotte to a stronger performance this season.

Spears shot 7-13 from the field, was a perfect 12-12 from the foul line and pulled down four rebounds in just 21 minutes of play. It was the first game action Spears had seen in more than a year after NCAA regulations wouldn’t allow him to play last year after transferring from Boston College.

“I’ve been talking to a lot of reporters and I’m always telling them for the last year, it’s just practice, practice, practice and I haven’t been able to beat up on nobody else but my teammates,” Spears said. “So it felt good tonight to come out there and play against somebody different.”

Charlotte jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. The 49ers’ lead swelled to as much as 31 in the first half and Charlotte held a 52-27 halftime advantage over the Golden Bulls.

“They shocked us, we expected that a little bit as a young basketball team, especially at the point guard position,” Bulls head coach Stephen Joyner Sr. said. “So we experienced some trouble there but I think after we settled our young people down and gave them some understanding, some things they could do to help themselves, they began to execute a little bit better, but they shocked us.”

In 29 minutes of action, senior point guard DiJuan Harris contributed eight points, 10 assists, three steals and six rebounds. Freshman forward Chris Braswell added 13 points of his own, senior Rashad Coleman had 11 points in just 16 minutes and newcomer Derrio Green had 11 points.

“Really happy with our first half, I thought we came out and really dictated play,” 49ers head coach Bobby Lutz said. “I thought we started with DiJuan (Harris), he really disrupted their guards early, then they settled in.”

JCSU, who is the two-time defending champion of the CIAA Tournament, was led by forward Jerry Hollis with 16 points and six rebounds in 31 minutes of play. The Golden Bulls struggled all night long, shooting just 39 percent from the field, getting outscored 48-18 in the paint and getting outscored 31-10 by Charlotte’s bench.

The Niners enjoyed a 40-35 rebounding advantage and had 11 blocked shots on the night. Freshman standout Chris Braswell led all players with eight rebounds to go along with his 13 points while junior center Phil Jones scored five points, had four rebounds and five blocks.

“Chris (Braswell) obviously was very, very effective tonight,” Lutz said. “He’s got his best basketball ahead of him. He made some really good passes, he’s got great feel for a high-low action and he’s got a knack around the basket of getting fouled or putting it in the hoop.”

Charlotte enjoyed a convincing win against the Golden Bulls, but will face a stiffer test next Friday night when UNC Asheville comes to town for the regular-season home opener.

Invisible Scrimmage time!

It's time again for the annual Charlotte 49ers "Invisible" scrimmage game. Charlotte is one of many NCAA teams that take advantage of an NCAA rule that allows for a "closed" scrimmage with another team before regular or exhibition season play.

In the past, Charlotte has played UNC-Wilmington, which is coached by former Charlotte assistant Benny Moss. This Saturday, the 49ers welcome a new opponent,Seth Greenberg and the Virginia Tech Hokies.

Don't check back here for updates or a recap because in the mind of the NCAA, it never happened!

Two Niners earn A-10 honors

Two members of the Charlotte 49ers nationally-ranked men’s and women’s soccer programs have been named A-10 Player of the Week for this week. For the second time this season, men’s soccer’s Adam Gross and women’s forward Whitney Weinraub were named Player of the Week in the same week.

Gross earned the Atlantic 10 honor for the second time this season after his efforts last weekend against La Salle and Fordham. Gross scored a goal in Charlotte’s 3-0 win over La Salle on Friday. He then scored the first goal for Charlotte in a 2-2 double-overtime tie against Fordham on Senior Day.

Gross is tied for third in the A-10 and leads Charlotte in the goal-scoring category with a career-high seven on the season. He also leads Charlotte in assists with six, which ranks him second in the conference.

Gross will lead nationally-ranked 49ers on the road this weekend as they take on A-10 foes Dayton and Xavier.

Whitney Weinraub earned A-10 Player of the Week for the third time this season for her efforts in the 49ers’ road wins against Temple and St. Joseph’s last weekend. The junior forward had two goals and two assists in Charlotte’s two wins. Weinraub had a goal and two assists in Charlotte’s 5-0 win over Temple, Friday. She then scored the game-winning goal in a 3-1 win against St. Joseph’s on Sunday.

Weinraub leads the A-10 in points with 32 and has a career-high 13 goals to lead the conference. Her 13 goals this season rank as the fourth highest single-season total in team history. Her 31 career goals tie her for third on the program’s all-time goal scoring list.

Weinraub will lead the 49ers as they look to claim their fourth straight A-10 regular-season title when they play their final regular season game on the road at St. Louis, Friday, Oct. 30.

Beam, McGowan and Wilson earn weekly honors

The Charlotte 49ers women’s soccer team swept the Atlantic 10 weekly honors this week. Senior forward Hailey Beam was named A-10 Co-Player of the week for the fifth time in her career. Beam was also named to TopDrawerSoccer.com’s National Team of the Week. Freshman defender Lacey McGowan was named A-10 Co-Rookie of the Week. The distinction marks the first time a 49er has won the award this season.

Over the weekend, Beam tallied six points with a goal and four assists in leading Charlotte to wins over A-10 opponents Richmond and George Washington. Beam had a goal and an assist in Charlotte’s 4-0 win over Richmond on Friday. She then assisted on all three goals in the 49ers come-from-behind 3-2 victory over George Washington on Senior Day.

Beam has 34 career goals and needs just two goals to tie Courtney Cook (1994-97) for the all-time program lead in goals scored. She currently leads the team in assists with ten and ranks second in the A-10 in the same category. She is also second on the team and second in the A-10 in goals scored. Beam has 99 career points and needs just three points to tie Cook’s career points mark.

McGowan lead Charlotte’s comeback win over George Washington on Senior Day. Trailing 2-0 at halftime, McGowan came out in the second half and scored the 49ers first two goals to tie the game at 2-2. On Friday, McGowan helped Charlotte post their 10th shutout of the season in a 4-0 win over Richmond.

McGowan has played in 13 games this season and has four goals and eight points. She has taken only four shots. All four of her goals have come off of Hailey Beam corner kicks.

Beam, McGowan and the rest of 49ers will put their 24-game unbeaten streak on the line this weekend as they travel north to face Temple and Saint Joseph’s, Oct. 23-25.

Charlotte 49ers senior Ryan Wilson has been named as the A-10 Golfer of the Week, for the week ending Oct. 19 for his efforts at the Brickyard Collegiate.

The event was shortened to 36 holes because of rain after Wilson shot identical rounds of one-over par 73. The two-over par total left Wilson in a tie for 28th place.

The event marked the first time Wilson led Charlotte in scoring during his two-year tenure with the team. Wilson transferred to Charlotte from High Point University as a two-time all-Big South performer.

At High Point, Wilson was the 2007 Big South Tournament runner-up to lead the Panthers to a 6th-place finish. Wilson was also named the Big South freshman of the year in 2006 after an eighth-place finish at the league championship tournament as well as leading the Panthers with a 73.96 stroke average.

The award marks the first A-10 Player of the Week award Wilson has won in his career and second for Charlotte this season. Senior All-American Corey Nagy was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week for Oct. 5. Andy Sajevic was named A-10 Rookie of the Week, Sept. 21.

In other golf news, the 49ers have added another tournament to their schedule after the rain-shortened Brickyard Collegiate. The 49ers will compete in the Aldila Intercollegiate, Oct. 26-27. The tournament will be held at the Council Fire Country Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Mathers named to National Team of the Week

Senior defender Nathan Mathers, of the Charlotte 49ers men's soccer team, has been named to College Soccer News' National Team of the Week. Mathers becomes the third Charlotte men's player to be named to the National Team of the Week this year as Evan James and Adam Gross have also received recognition.

Anchoring a defense that has allowed just one goal in the last 410 minutes of play, Mathers has been a defensive standout all year long. Mathers also assisted on Gross' game-winning goal in Saturday's 2-1 road win at St. Louis.

Mathers has two assists this season, but is more prominent on the defensive side of the ball. Mathers and the 49er defense has recorded four shutouts and limited nine teams to a goal or less this season.

Charlotte will put it's 11-game unbeaten streak on the line this weekend as they face A-10 foes La Salle and Fordham in their final regular season home games Oct. 23-25.

Volleyball jumps into third in A-10 standings

The Charlotte 49ers women's volleyball team moved into sole position of third place in the Atlantic 10 with a 3-1 win over visiting George Washington Saturday night.

The Niners are now 5-2 in league play and 14-8 overall. Now 22-10 in three seasons at home under coach Chris Redding, the Niners improved their 2009 home record to 7-1.

Junior Kat Hicks recorded her first double-double of the season with 12 kills and 11 digs. Kara Raker had 11 kills and seven blocks, and freshman Bianca Rouse recorded 10 kills. Sophomore setter Sheri Davis was just two kills short of a triple-double. Davis had 33 assists, 14 digs, and eight kills. Senior Kaitlin Knight led all players with 23 digs.

Charlotte closes out the non-conference portion of their schedule when they head to Clemson Tuesday night before hosting Xavier and Dayton in league play next weekend.

Dollar General 300

Kyle Busch dominated the Dollar General 300 at Lowes Motor Speedway Friday night and got his seventh Nationwide Series win of the season. Prior to Friday night’s race, Busch averaged a seventh-place finish each week, finished outside the top 10 in only five events, and held a 155-point lead over second-place Carl Edwards in the point standings.

“This thing was on a rail tonight, it was a great racecar,” Busch said. “This is my house on the Nationwide side, I really like this place.”

The race was never in doubt as Busch led 137 of the 200 laps and extended his points lead to 195 over Carl Edwards; the win was the 28th of Busch’s Nationwide career. With the win, Busch broke a tie with Jeff Burton for fourth on the all-time series wins list. He also had a perfect driver rating of 150.0.

“I felt like we did everything right, but anything could have happened tonight,” Busch said.” Now we’re this late in the game, it’s just going to be about luck. I think some of my best competition fell away, I don’t know what happened to the 16, but he was there in the beginning. I just felt like we were in another zip code tonight.”

Mike Bliss brought the Ridemakerz.com Toyota home in second for his 12th top-10 finish of the season. The second-place finish was the fifth top-10 finish in the last 10 races for Bliss.

“It means a lot to me, it feels really good, I love Charlotte, I love this racetrack,” Bliss said.” I felt really good from the moment we parked the trailer. I’m excited about that finish. I think he (Busch) just dominated the race, we knew he was the car to beat.”

Dave Blaney finished third, his third top-10 finish in 16 career races at Lowes Motor Speedway at Charlotte. Making just his fourth start of the season, Blaney was pleasantly surprised with the final result.

“Everything was going great tonight. I haven’t been able to do much racing this year,” Blaney said.” that was fun. I thought it was real good in practice, it just took off early and went all night.”

Ninth-place starter Brian Vickers finished fourth in the Dollar general Toyota and Pole winner Carl Edwards rounded out the top five in the Ortho Ford.

One of the biggest movers on the night was Brad Keselowski in the Hellman’s Chevrolet. After starting in 29th, Keselowski progressively improved his position and eventually battled his way to a sixth-place finish. The sixth-place finish leaves Keselowski third in the points standings, 272 behind Busch.

Kyle Busch will look to continue his hot streak next week when the Nationwide series heads to Memphis.

Banking 500 preview/HOF reactions

Race No. 5 in the Chase brings us to the midway point of the quest for this season’s championship title. This weekend at the Banking 500 should give us a good idea of what to expect in the following weeks. The Saturday night race will be the second intermediate oval in the 10 races of the Chase. Mark Martin and Juan Montoya’s solid consistency, and Jimmie Johnson’s two wins in the Chase have elevated them as the favorites for the championship. But they aren’t the only ones to watch at this Saturday’s Banking 500.

1. Kasey Kahne –Kahne hasn’t had the best results to show for as of late, but the 29-year old has been one of the most successful drivers at Lowe’s Motor Speedway recently. The No. 9 team has won three of the last seven races held at the North Carolina oval and seems to be a serious threat for Saturday’s title. Despite the crash and DNF at Fontana last week, Kahne seems to be a serious threat to win the NASCAR Banking 500.

2. Jimmie Johnson-After seemingly sleepwalking through the regular season, the No. 48 team is finally heating up. Coming off two wins in the Chase at Fontana and Dover, Johnson is riding a tidal wave of momentum into one of his favorite venues. Johnson hasn’t visited Victory Lane at Charlotte since the 2005 season, but he owns five career victories at LMS. A win on Saturday Night would tie Johnson for the most all-time victories at the track with Darrell Waltrip and Bobby Allison.

3. Mark Martin-With the first championship of his career within his reach, Martin will be pushing the envelope at the Banking 500 this weekend. Only trailing Jimmie Johnson in the points, Martin knows how tough Johnson can be in the Chase and will have to be aggressive this weekend. Martin has been very tough at 1.5-mile ovals this season and owns four career victories at LMS. After a recent top-five finish at Atlanta (another 1.5-mile oval), Martin is riding a wave of confidence into Charlotte.

4. Jeff Gordon-With two runner-up finishes and a sixth-place finish in four Chase races so far, Jeff Gordon has been sneaky good. Despite just one win in 2009, Gordon has been strong with eight runner-up finishes and 14 top-fives and looks to be a threat at Charlotte. With a win on Saturday, Gordon would move into third all-time in wins at the track with five.

5. Tony Stewart-In fourth place in points, just 84 behind leader Jimmie Johnson, Tony Stewart and the No. 14 team has finally come back to life. Stewart has led the team to one win and three top-10’s in the four Chase races. The 1.5-mile oval provides the opportunity to climb back within reach of the championship for Stewart. His recent win at Kansas demonstrates the ability Stewart has on this style of track.

Hall of Fame discussion headlines pre-race press conferences
NASCAR founder Bill France Sr. headlined the five inductees into the Hall of Fame class, a group that drew mixed reactions about the exclusion of driver David Pearson. Bill France Jr., Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, and Junior Johnson were also inducted.

Second in the voting was NASCAR’s all-time wins leader and seven-time series champion Richard Petty. Petty won the Daytona 500 seven times, amassed 200 career victories, and had 700 top-10 finishes in his illustrious career.

Following Petty was France Jr., who spent nearly 30 years at the helm of America’s top motorsports series. The final two nods went to Earnhardt, winner of 72 races and seven championships, and Junior Johnson, a former driver and car-owner.

The top news of the induction might not be who was inducted, but the fact that David Pearson was left out. After hearing who would be inducted with him in next May’s ceremony, Petty was definitely surprised.

“That wouldn’t have been my pick,” he said.

Known by many as the “Silver Fox”, Pearson ranked second on NASCAR’s all-time wins list with 105, only trailing Petty’s 200 victories. The three-time series champion had a 27-year career including an 18.2 winning percentage.

Much of the discussion in the media center Thursday morning was geared toward the exclusion of Pearson, and the number of inductees.

Second in the current point standings, Mark Martin thinks maybe there should have more than five inductees in the 2010 class but is generally happy with the selections.

“I would have liked to see them induct a lot more than five,” Martin said. “The guys that went in, they certainly need to be there. I just wish that we could have put another 15 in along with them; but it’s exciting to finally have it started.”

Three-time series champion Jimmie Johnson is happy with the 2010 inductees and feels like it’s a step in the right direction that so many people care about the controversy surrounding the inductions.

“I’m excited to see the first five selected,” Johnson said. “I think it was going to be tough either way for the world to be happy with the five. I understand there is some controversy about the overall picks but I think it’s a great class, I think it represents our sport very well.”

Defending race champion Jeff Burton think it’s important for any sport to have a Hall of Fame and says that although the first decision was a tough one, the first two or three class selections will be the easiest.

“I think it’s important for every major sport to have a Hall of Fame,” Burton said.” I think it’s important to recognize the people that have had a major impact on the sport, have moved the sport, and have done things that have made it what it is. The first two or three processes are going to be pretty easy.”

49ers finish 10th at Brickyard Collegiate

The Charlotte 49ers men’s golf team finished 10th at the Brickyard Collegiate after the third and final round was cancelled due to rain. Half of the third round was played and Charlotte was able to move into a tie for fifth, but rain cause the final round to be cancelled. By rule, the final results must be reverted back to where the teams started the round. Charlotte entered the final round in a tie for 10th with 15th-ranked North Florida.

Augusta State took home the tournament title with a 13-under par, 563. Chattanooga and Clemson finished in a tie for second at even-par, 576. Seven of the nine teams that finished ahead of Charlotte were ranked in Golfstat’s top 50 while Charlotte finished ahead of 19th-ranked Georgia Tech (12th, +17, 593) and 18th-ranked Michigan (15, +26, 602).

Ryan Wilson led Charlotte with a tie for 28th individually at +2, 146. Sophomore Olafur Loftssontied for 35th at +3, 147 after carding a second-round one-under par 71. Coming off his third career collegiate victory, senior Corey Nagy tied for 47th with a +5, 149; finishing alongside Nagy in 47th was freshman Andy Sajevic.

Winning the individual title was Georgia’s Russell Henley, who fired a second-round 65 (-10, 134) to take the title by five shots over Georgia Tech’s John Tyler Griffin.

After playing in three tournaments this fall, Charlotte will take to the course again at the CordeValle Collegiate, Nov. 9-11, in San Martin, Calif. The tournament will be the last for Charlotte of the fall campaign.

Seven 49ers earn weekly honors

Seven Charlotte 49er student-athletes earned Atlantic 10 weekly honors on Monday. Men’s golf senior Corey Nagy, women’s cross country junior Amanda Goetschius, women’s soccer senior Hailey Beam, and men’s soccer sophomore Evan James earned A-10 Player of the Week honors. Earning ookie of the Week accolades were volleyball freshman Bianca Rouse, cross country freshman Maria Ruiz, and Jennings Rex of men’s soccer.

Finishing in 12th in the Charlotte Invitational 5k with a personal best time of 17:58, Ruiz picked up her second A-10 Rookie of the Week honor of the year. Ruiz also won Rookie of the Week Sept. 8 for her second place finish in her collegiate debut at the USC Upstate Eye Opener.

Goetschius, the 2008 Atlantic 10 Individual Champion, had a runner-up finish at the Charlotte Invitational and earned the honors for her personal best time of 17:09. In a field of more than 200 competitors, Goetschius led the 49ers to a first-place finish in the meet.

Defending A-10 Champion Corey Nagy was named A-10 Golfer of the Week after recording his third career individual victory at the VCU Shootout. Nagy finished the tournament at six-under, 210. The three-time all-American led Charlotte to a ninth-place team finish after firing an opening round 69 and shot a two-under 70 in the final round to win the title by two shots.

Rouse put up a career-high 16 kills against just one error in 32 attempts in Charlotte’s five-set win over Fordham in the Dig Pink Match and led Charlotte in kills in both conference matches this weekend. The award marked the third time this season that a Charlotte volleyball player has won Rookie of the Week honor and was the first time for Rouse.

Beam scored the game-winner in each of Charlotte’s wins last weekend and is also second on the team in goal-scoring with seven. She has 33 career goals and is just four goals shy of breaking the program’s all-time scoring record.

Beam earned Player of the Week honors for her role in the team’s victories over Rhode Island and Massachusetts last weekend. It marked the fourth time in her career that Beam won the award. The women’s soccer team has had a player win the award in three consecutive weeks and four times this season.

James scored a goal and assisted on the game-winner in Charlotte’s 3-1 win over #3 Wake Forest last Tuesday to take home Player of the Week honors. The 49ers’ road win snapped the Demon Deacons’ nation’s best 46-match non-conference unbeaten streak. The men’s program has won Player of the Week honors three times this season, the recognition also marked the second time this season that James has won the award. TopDrawerSoccer.com named Charlotte the National Team of the Week for the second time this season.

Rex scored the game-winner on his only shot against #3 Wake Forest in the team’s 3-1 win last week. Rex also made his first career start in the team’s 1-0 win over Furman last Saturday. The award gave men’s soccer a clean sweep of the weekly A-10 awards after Rex won Rookie of the Week for the second time this season.

A-10 Basketball Previews

St. Joe's

St. Joe’s will look to rebound after a down year in 2008-09 that saw them miss the NCAA Tournament after making it the previous year. St. Joe’s went 17-14 overall last year and just 9-7 in A-10 play, good for a fifth place finish. Head coach Phil Martelli has led the team to six NCAA Tournament appearances during his 14-year tenure, Martelli also led the Hawks to a 27-0 perfect regular season in 2003-04 and an Elite 8 appearance. St. Joe’s will look to ride the back of senior guard Darrin Govens who averaged 12.5 ppg last year, started all but one game, and averaged 35 minutes per game.

Rhode Island

After a 23-11 overall record and 2nd place finish in the A-10, coach Jim Baron and Rhode Island will look to build on recent success in 2009-10. Senior guard Keith Cothran averaged 13.2 ppg, scored in double-digits on 22 different occasions, averaged 27 minutes per game last year and will lead the Ram’s attack. With three consecutive seasons of 20+ wins, Rhode Island looks to be a real threat to the A-10 title and could possibly be an NCAA Tournament team. Junior center Will Martell looks to be a mainstay for Rhode Island this year. The 7-foot, 245 pound Michigan native averaged 12.9 minutes per game and provides a sizeable presence in the paint for the Rams.

George Washington

Coming off consecutive lackluster years of conference play, coach Karl Hobbs will look to turn the Colonials around this season. With three returning starters and nine letterwinners, the Colonials should work their way up from the depths of the A-10. That might be a hard task to accomplish after losing 2008-09 team MVP Rob Diggs. As a senior, Diggs averaged 13.4 ppg, 7.3 rpg, and had 47 blocks on the year. Looking to lead the Colonials will be senior forward Damian Hollis. Hollis averaged 13.4 ppg, 6.1 rpg, and was an 84 percent free-throw shooter in 08-09. One upside for the Colonials will be the depth at the guard position, as they have five on the roster.

Richmond

Richmond might be one of the surprise teams in the A-10 this year. Under the direction of fifth-year coach Chris Mooney, the Spiders have five returning starters and 11 letterwinners to a team that finished fifth in the conference in 2008-09. After leading the team in scoring in his first two seasons, center Dan Geriot tore his ACL last summer and missed the entire 08-09 season. Standing at 6-9/255, Geriot gives the Spiders a huge presence in the paint and should have a huge impact this season. At 6-10/225, junior forward Justin Harper should be a mainstay for Richmond. Harper had a career-high 28 points and nine rebounds against URI last season.

College Game of the Week

LSU (4-0) at Georgia (3-1), 3:30 EST, Saturday, October 3, CBS. Line: Georgia -3

The Tigers of LSU have finally worked their way into the top 5, but that might be totally by default and name recognition. LSU hasn't played all that well and needed a goal-line stand just to escape an upset at Mississippi St. last Saturday. Will they be the latest of the top-5 teams to take a hit? Maybe, but with a win between the hedges on Saturday, LSU could be set up for the game of the year when Florida travels to Death Valley next week.

Georgia hasn't been the model of consistency either. They lost to Oklahoma State in the opener, needed a late defensive stop to get by South Carolina, barely held on against Arkansas, and needed a late field goal to beat Arizona State.

Georgia's offense has been a positive, with senior Joe Cox completing 60 percent of his passes for 980 yards and nine touchdowns. The defense however, is as bad as it's been in a long time, allowing almost 30 points per game, 74 first downs, and ten passing touchdowns. This just isn't the same Georgia defense we're used to.

For LSU, it's the complete opposite. With all the supposed NFL talent and great recruits, this offense should be producing at a high level, it's simply not happening. he passing game has been somewhat efficient, but the offense as a whole seems to be relying on the defense to win the game, which happened on Saturday. LSU has had somewhat of an easy schedule and hasn't had the offensive fire-power needed to put teams away. Georgia's offense meanwhile has been on a roll, averaging more than 30 points per game and 357 yards per game. If Georgia's offense gets rolling, they're going to be hard to stop.

Two players to keep an eye on will be LSU senior WR Brandon LaFell and Georgia sophomore wideout A.J. Green. Coming into the season, LaFell was the more highly-touted NFL prospect of the two, Green has been better though. The sophomore standout has 25 catches for 428 yards and four scores, including eight grabs for 153 yards and a score against Arizona State last week.

I look for LSU's defense to set up the offense for some much-needed points, but Georgia's offense will just be too much for LSU in front of a home crowd of more than 92,000 at Sanford Stadium. I like Georgia in a close one 28-24.

Men's soccer shuts down Wake Forest

Evan James, Jennings Rex, and Owen Darby all scored for Charlotte as the men's soccer team knocked off ACC powerhouse Wake Forest on the road Tuesday night 3-1. The Demon Deacons came in as the 3rd ranked team in the country.

James started the scoring in the tenth minute when he took a long Andres Cuero pass and was left one-on-one with goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald. James quickly chipped the ball past Fitzgerald for his 5th goal of the season to give Charlotte a 1-0 lead.

Jennings Rex made it 2-0 Charlotte in the 59th minute with his third goal of the season. Evan James gave an emaculate cross from the right side to place the ball perfectly in front of the goal and with a simple flick of his head, Rex made the score 2-0.

Wake Forest forward Andy Lubahn didn't wait long to cut the 49ers lead in half. Just 19 seconds after Rex's third goal of the season, Lubahn made the score 2-1 when he knocked in a rebound in front for his second goal of the season.

Owen Darby sealed the deal just ten minutes later when he took advantage of a Wake Forest turnover and nailed one into the back of the net for his first of the season. Josh Norwood had the assist.

Wake Forest held a 14-9 shot advantage but the 49ers had the advantage where it counts the most. Charlotte will be in action again on Saturday night when they travel to Greenville, SC to take on the Paladins of Furman.
